EMMROD Revisited In my first Emmrod article, I raved about the rods and how much fun they were to use. I enjoy them so much and I have been after the folks there to come up with an improved bait casting rig incorporating a Fuji style trigger grip. It took almost two years of asking, but they have come out with a bait caster that you have to fish to believe. It is the same type of stainless steel rod and the handle can be equipped with any bait cast reel on the market. True to their advertising, it will cast comparable to a 6 foot rod. This new one performs like a champ and, with practice, the casting distance is simply incredible. I received my new rod a few weeks before my yearly trip to Lake of the Woods. This is a McGovern family tradition dating back to the late 1960’s. The fish were there in huge numbers this year and it proved to be a banner year for the new Emmrod. My largest smallmouth of the entire week (pictured here) was caught on my new Emmrod bait caster. I rigged the rod with a Shimano Curado CU200, a reel now into an E series in the new versions coming for the 09 season. Combined with a smooth handling bait caster like the Curado, the rig is a blast to fish with and casts very well. I also added the Redfish Magic spinner bait (see my recent article on this website). The line on the reel is 16lb Momoi Hi-Catch mono. I fished the rig both with and without a section of 20lb test fluorocarbon leader. In either case, there were no bite offs or broken lines due to rubbing on the rocks. Although I had seven other rods with me on the boat, the little Emmrod kept finding its way into my hands. It was just too much fun not to fish it. When you hook up with the Emmrod, it’s a battle royal you want to repeat time and time again. The new rod will be featured on the Emmrod website very soon. Keep checking for the new listing. They do require practice (as with any bait cast rig) but once mastered, you will find them hard to put down. I use mine from the W kayak here in Florida and enjoy it for topwater lures as well as the Redfish Magic spinners. I also find it a great stress reliever for backyard lawn bass fishing with a practice plug. My daughter and son in law’s two dogs love to race back and forth across the yard chasing those little red practice plugs. I even had an osprey swoop down and try to nail it in the middle of the street. Have you looked at the Emmrod site and wondered “Do those things really work?” I assure you, they do. I find the Emmrods to be very accurate, enabling the angler to place a lure right where they want it. They are outstanding in tight quarters where a longer rod cannot be worked effectively. This rod is a wonderful addition to any fisherman’s arsenal. Give them a try and you, too, might find them very hard to put down.
